Iraq pushes digital transformation plan with 5G network rollout

Iraq 5G digital transformation is moving forward as the Communications and Media Commission confirms the country’s commitment to building a modern digital system and activating next-generation mobile networks. Officials say the plan aims to improve connectivity, attract investment, and strengthen Iraq’s digital economy.

The announcement came during the Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR26) held in Ankara, where Iraq’s regulatory authority outlined its long-term vision for telecommunications development. Baligh Abu Galal, head of the executive body of the Communications and Media Commission, emphasized that Iraq is entering a new phase of digital growth.

He said Iraq aims to build a modern digital system that supports innovation and protects users while encouraging investment in the telecommunications sector. He also highlighted the importance of flexible regulatory frameworks that adapt to rapid technological change.

The Iraq 5G digital transformation strategy focuses on improving internet quality and expanding mobile services across the country. Officials believe stronger digital infrastructure will help support business growth, e-government services, and wider access to online platforms.

Abu Galal explained that Iraq is experiencing rising demand for digital services due to increased internet and smartphone use. He said the Communications and Media Commission continues working to regulate telecommunications, broadcasting, and digital platforms in a transparent and fair manner.

In February 2025, the Commission issued a new regulatory framework for digital platforms and services. Officials described the framework as an important step toward modernizing Iraq’s digital governance. It also includes both local and international service providers operating in the country.

The Iraq 5G digital transformation plan also includes preparations for launching fifth-generation mobile networks. Officials stressed that 5G technology will play a key role in improving internet speed, connectivity, and service reliability across Iraq.

Authorities said the rollout requires technical readiness, regulatory adjustments, and investment from both public and private sectors. They believe cooperation with international partners will help accelerate implementation and ensure stable deployment of the new network.

During the symposium, Iraq expressed support for global regulatory principles that encourage investment and reduce barriers for market entry. Officials also highlighted the importance of cybersecurity, consumer protection, and fair competition in the digital sector.

Experts attending GSR26 discussed global trends in digital governance and telecommunications regulation. Topics included innovation, market competition, and international cooperation between regulatory bodies.

Iraq 5G digital transformation reflects a broader national effort to modernize infrastructure and improve digital services. Authorities believe that stronger connectivity will support economic development and create new opportunities for businesses and citizens across the country.

Officials confirmed that Iraq will continue working toward full 5G activation while strengthening regulatory systems and expanding digital access nationwide.
