Iraq Basra Oil University Project

Iraq is preparing to build a major oil and gas university in Basra. The initiative aims to strengthen the country’s energy sector. Officials say the university will train future engineers and experts to support Iraq’s oil and gas industry.

The Basra provincial council confirmed the project after approval from the Ministry of Planning. The ministry authorized a “design and build” approach to speed construction. This method ensures the project moves efficiently from planning to completion.

The total cost for the new university will reach 918.2 billion Iraqi dinars, equivalent to $695 million. Officials report that funding will come directly from Iraq’s oil revenues. This investment reflects Iraq’s continued reliance on oil for public spending and development.

Data from the Ministry of Finance show Iraq collected over 114 trillion Iraqi dinars ($87 billion) in federal budget revenues last year. As well as, Oil alone accounted for 100.56 trillion dinars ($76 billion), representing nearly 88% of total income. Non-oil sources contributed roughly 13.48 trillion dinars ($10 billion), making up the remaining 12%.

The Basra university project also includes modern research facilities. However, Officials plan specialized labs for petroleum engineering, geosciences, and renewable energy. Students will access the latest technology to prepare for careers in Iraq’s energy sector.

Council member Hassan Shaddad Al-Faris emphasized that the project will help Iraq remain competitive globally. “The new university will train skilled professionals to meet modern energy demands,” he said.Additionally, Analysts note that Iraq Basra oil university will strengthen the workforce and improve sector efficiency.

The government expects the university to attract both local and international students. Partnerships with global oil and gas companies are also in planning stages. These collaborations aim to bring advanced knowledge and innovation to Iraq’s energy industry.

Iraq Basra oil university construction will create jobs for engineers, contractors, and academic staff. Local businesses will benefit from new demand for services and supplies. The project highlights Iraq’s strategy to invest oil revenues in sustainable development.

Officials stress that the university is only one part of Iraq’s broader energy strategy. Investments in infrastructure, research, and education are critical to long-term growth. The Basra university represents both education and economic planning priorities for Iraq.
