Nasiriyah International Airport Nears Launch as Iraq Expands Transport Network

Iraq is preparing to open Nasiriyah International Airport within the next few months, marking a significant step in the country’s efforts to strengthen transportation, tourism, and economic development. The long-awaited Nasiriyah International Airport project is expected to enhance connectivity in southern Iraq while supporting several major national development plans.

Officials in Dhi Qar province say the airport will play a key role in attracting visitors and improving access to important historical and cultural destinations. The project comes as Iraq continues investing in infrastructure aimed at diversifying its economy and modernizing public services.

Dhi Qar Governor Haitham al-Hamdani said the airport’s opening will provide a major boost to tourism in the province. He noted that the facility will make travel more efficient and shorten transit times for both domestic and international passengers. Local authorities expect the airport to support growing visitor numbers to archaeological and religious sites across the region.

The governor also highlighted the airport’s strategic importance for Iraq’s ambitious Development Road initiative. The project seeks to strengthen trade and transportation links across the country while creating new economic opportunities. Officials believe the airport will complement these efforts by improving regional accessibility and supporting future investment.

Several attractions in Dhi Qar are expected to benefit from the new transportation hub. Authorities estimate that tourist destinations in the province could attract more than one million visitors annually in the coming years. Easier access may encourage both international travelers and domestic tourists to explore the area’s rich heritage.

The Iraqi government awarded the airport project to the Chinese State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC), which serves as the main contractor. Construction and development work has focused on creating a modern aviation facility capable of handling future growth in passenger traffic.

The project includes extensive upgrades to airport infrastructure. Workers have renovated the 3,400-meter runway and improved the airport apron, which covers approximately 185,000 square meters. Development plans also feature modern passenger terminals, a dedicated VIP facility, and a cargo terminal designed to support commercial activity.

In addition, the airport complex will include a four-star hotel and several administrative and navigation facilities. These additions aim to improve operational efficiency while providing services for travelers and aviation personnel.

The airport forms part of broader efforts to upgrade Iraq’s aviation sector. Earlier agreements between the Ministry of Transport and the International Finance Corporation, a member of the World Bank Group, focused on developing long-term strategies for airport rehabilitation and expansion across the country.

When operations begin, Nasiriyah International Airport will accommodate around 750,000 passengers annually. Authorities have also prepared a ten-year expansion strategy that could increase capacity to approximately 2.5 million passengers each year. The expansion reflects expectations of growing demand as tourism, trade, and economic activity continue to increase throughout southern Iraq.
