Iraq’s solar power expansion continues to gain momentum as the country increases renewable energy projects across public institutions. Government officials announced that hundreds of schools and public buildings now operate, or soon will operate, with solar energy systems. The National Team for Renewable Energy Projects confirmed on Monday that the nationwide program has reached another major milestone. According to the latest figures, engineers have completed solar installations at 209 schools and seven comprehensive healthcare centers in several Iraqi provinces.
Officials said the project supports the government’s strategy to promote clean energy while reducing pressure on the national electricity network. The initiative also seeks to lower carbon emissions and improve access to dependable power for essential public services. Naseer Karim Qasim, head of the National Team for Renewable Energy Projects, provided an update to the Iraqi News Agency. He explained that the team signed agreements with more than 13 companies specializing in renewable energy technologies during the past year.
These partnerships have helped speed up project implementation across the country. Engineering teams have focused first on educational facilities because of their importance to local communities. During the past nine months, workers completed solar energy systems at 209 schools located in both northern and southern provinces.
The government has also expanded the initiative beyond schools. More than 150 government buildings currently have solar energy projects under construction. Officials believe these installations will improve energy efficiency while reducing operating costs across public institutions.
Several major government facilities have already reached more than 90 percent completion. These include the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers, the Ministry of Water Resources, and the Sunni Endowment Directorate. Project teams continue to finalize the remaining work before these systems become fully operational.
The renewable energy program also covers institutions responsible for public safety and community services. Installation work continues at the Ministry of Interior’s Directorate for Combating Organized Crime and at Al-Jaish Sports Club. Officials expect these projects to strengthen energy resilience while supporting daily operations.
