Iraq continues improving its public services by investing in healthcare. The government has launched a new hospital project in central Baghdad. This initiative supports the broader goal of transforming old sites into public assets. Additionally, the project takes place at the former location of the well-known “Turkish Restaurant” building.
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani led the hospital’s groundbreaking ceremony. He declared this hospital part of the “Baghdad is More Beautiful” campaign. This plan turns abandoned buildings into modern public service centers. As well as, the Prime Minister stood alongside several key figures, including the Deputy Speaker of the Italian Senate and a European Union representative.
The hospital will feature 103 beds and advanced medical equipment. It includes an intensive care unit with 19 beds and seven private wings. Iraqi authorities have partnered with the Italian company GKSD for this project. In addition, GKSD operates over 160 medical centers globally and has completed projects in Najaf. The company now plans similar efforts in Basra.
A related firm, Hospital Healthcare Holdings (HHH), will support the hospital’s setup. This marks another major step in modern hospital investment for Iraq. As well as, the project shows Iraq’s focus on blending local efforts with international experience.
Prime Minister Al-Sudani praised the Ministry of Health and other local agencies. He highlighted their efforts in developing medical infrastructure. Additionally, he also shared plans to launch 16 new hospitals, each with 100-bed capacity. These facilities will appear in various provinces.
The government also improved local pharmaceutical production. In recent years, production coverage grew from 10% to 40%. Iraq now produces more of its medical supplies, cutting reliance on imports. Al-Sudani emphasized the importance of modern hospital investment in keeping Iraqis from seeking treatment abroad.
The Prime Minister promoted joint operation models with global partners. He stressed the need to reduce healthcare costs and improve patient services. This includes encouraging local factories to produce essential medical supplies. These changes support economic growth and improve healthcare access.
Iraq also plans to simplify investment procedures. As well as, the government wants to attract more major healthcare investors. New reforms aim to cut red tape and shorten project timelines. Al-Sudani called this a key step toward long-term national health goals.
This new facility represents more than just a hospital. However, it reflects Iraq’s commitment to rebuilding its healthcare system. With modern hospital investment, the country hopes to stop capital flight, boost job creation, and raise service standards.
