Construction of Nasiriyah International Airport has reached 68% completion in Iraq’s Dhi Qar Governorate. The Nasiriyah airport project continues to advance as authorities prepare for its targeted opening in early 2027. Officials say construction remains on schedule despite several technical requirements still underway.
Captain Ihab Saad, director general of the General Company for Airports Management and Air Navigation Services, said work continues at an accelerating pace. He expects authorities to deliver the airport in early 2027 if construction proceeds without major disruptions. The project has already passed several important construction milestones.
Civil and structural works currently account for 68% of the overall project. Progress could increase further after contractors receive new batches of ground handling and airfield equipment. Authorities are preparing to install the equipment once technical inspections and approvals finish.
A specialized Iraqi technical committee is also traveling to China to inspect key equipment before shipment. The team will conduct factory acceptance tests for navigation, baggage handling, and ground operations systems. These inspections aim to ensure that the equipment meets required technical and operational standards.
Authorities have also addressed several problems that previously affected the project’s progress. Project officials are now preparing a new contract appendix to settle remaining technical and logistical matters. The adjustment should help clarify responsibilities and support the next stages of construction.
The Nasiriyah airport project began with the foundation stone ceremony in June 2021. Authorities designed the airport to become an important commercial and logistics center for southern Iraq. Its location gives the project strategic importance for Dhi Qar and surrounding areas.
The project has undergone several changes to its implementation schedule. In July 2024, Iraq’s Ministry of Transport completed contractual amendments covering consultancy, design, and construction arrangements. The changes involved Turkish and Chinese companies working on different parts of the project.
Earlier plans targeted completion during different periods between late 2025 and early 2026. Project managers later revised the timetable to accommodate equipment testing and installation. They also needed additional time for aviation systems integration and final certification procedures.
Once completed, the airport could significantly improve transportation links across southern Iraq. It will provide a new gateway for passengers, businesses, and international visitors. The facility could also support investment and commercial activity in Dhi Qar.
The airport’s location could create additional opportunities for tourism in the governorate. Travelers will gain easier access to the ancient city of Ur and the Mesopotamian Marshes. The airport could also serve industrial areas and other economic centers across southern Iraq.
The Nasiriyah airport project now enters an important stage as authorities prepare for equipment installation and final construction work. Successful factory testing will help determine the timing of subsequent installations. If current progress continues, the airport could begin operations in early 2027.
