Iraq is preparing to significantly increase fuel production after completing a major expansion project at the Maysan refinery expansion site. Officials confirmed that work on a new refining unit has reached its final phase, with operations expected to begin within days.
The project will add 70,000 barrels per day to the refinery’s existing output. Once the unit becomes operational, the total processing capacity of the Maysan refinery will rise to 110,000 barrels per day.
Iraqi oil authorities said the new facility meets modern international technical and environmental standards. The expansion forms part of Baghdad’s broader strategy to modernize the country’s energy infrastructure and strengthen domestic fuel production.
Maysan has become one of Iraq’s important energy hubs in recent years. Government officials believe the refinery project will support economic activity across the province and nearby areas. The expansion is also expected to create additional job opportunities during both operational and maintenance stages.
The Ministry of Oil explained that the refinery upgrade aligns with national plans to reduce dependence on imported petroleum products. Iraq continues to invest heavily in refining projects to achieve greater self-sufficiency and improve fuel supply stability across local markets.
Deputy Oil Minister for Refining Affairs, Adnan Mohammed Hamoud, praised the efforts of engineers, technicians, and workers involved in the project. He also commended staff from the South Refineries Company for helping the advancement of Iraq’s refining sector.
The government has recently accelerated several refinery developments across the country. Officials aim to increase refining capacity while improving production efficiency and environmental performance. Authorities also hope future surplus production will allow Iraq to export more refined petroleum products to foreign markets.
Energy analysts say the Maysan refinery expansion could help Iraq improve fuel availability and reduce pressure on domestic energy supplies. Rising refinery capacity may also strengthen the country’s industrial sector by supporting transportation, manufacturing, and commercial activity.
Iraq remains one of the world’s leading oil producers, yet officials continue working to expand refining capabilities inside the country. Large infrastructure projects like the Maysan development play a key role in that long-term strategy.
The latest Maysan refinery expansion reflects Baghdad’s ongoing effort to modernize the energy sector while supporting economic growth and regional development.
