Iraq launches Baghdad Sustainable Forests Project to transform Al-Rashid Camp into green space

Iraq has started Iraq’s Sustainable Forests Project in Baghdad, marking a major step toward a greener future. The National Investment Commission (NIC) began planting trees in the former Al-Rashid Camp area. This work will turn the old, polluted site into a large green and sustainable forest — the biggest urban afforestation project in the capital.

The NIC granted the investment licence for the project earlier. It will include new parks, recreation areas, and commercial spaces surrounded by trees. The project supports Iraq’s plan to attract partners and investors for green development. The Commission also worked with government agencies to make sure all approvals and support were ready for the project’s launch.

Project managers said the planting will include native and climate-resilient trees. The plan also adds walking areas, community gardens, and learning spaces to teach people about protecting nature. These green zones will help reduce heat, clean the air, and improve life in Baghdad.

Iraq’s Sustainable Forests Project reflects the government’s promise to protect the environment and fight pollution. It also encourages citizens to help care for the new forest. Local residents will join in monitoring and maintaining the green areas to keep them healthy for the long term.

In the next phases, the NIC will track tree growth and carry out environmental studies. Teams will also start public campaigns to explain why urban forests matter. They will cooperate with schools and community groups to spread environmental awareness.

The initiative shows Iraq’s growing focus on sustainability and smart urban planning. Officials believe the forest will become a new model for other cities to follow. It will also help reduce Baghdad’s pollution and increase green cover across the capital.

Through Iraq’s Sustainable Forests Project, Iraq takes a major step in balancing development and nature. The project combines government effort, private investment, and public participation. It highlights how green projects can improve city life and protect the environment at the same time.
