Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani reaffirmed his government’s commitment to empowering women by introducing new financial and training programs across Iraq. During a meeting of the Supreme Council for Women’s Affairs, he announced the Basmat Initiative, a plan to offer soft loans for women’s small and medium enterprises.
The soft loans for women’s small and medium enterprises will be provided in partnership with Iraqi banks and the Credit Guarantee Company. This initiative aims to help women establish and expand their businesses, increase their income, and play a stronger role in the private sector.
Al-Sudani also directed council members to engage with women entrepreneurs and project owners through the Businesswomen’s Council and the Federation of Industries. These meetings will identify challenges and create better support mechanisms for women-led businesses.
The council further approved the second phase of a training program for 1,500 female agricultural engineers in 15 provinces. In addition, a new program will train 500 women in civil, architectural, and veterinary fields in Baghdad. These programs aim to enhance women’s technical skills and prepare them for professional opportunities.
As part of efforts to boost women’s participation in politics, the Prime Minister instructed coordination with the Independent High Electoral Commission. This collaboration will train female candidates and protect them from online harassment and blackmail.
He also called for greater cooperation with the Child Welfare Authority to strengthen child protection policies. The authority will join the next council meeting to discuss recent progress and new strategies for child welfare.
Through these actions, the government aims to build an inclusive economy where women can thrive as entrepreneurs, professionals, and leaders. The soft loans for women’s small and medium enterprises represent a vital step toward economic equality and sustainable growth in Iraq.
