Iraqi Drilling Company Completes 4,152m Horizontal Well in East Baghdad

Iraqi Drilling Company has completed drilling a 4,152-meter horizontal oil well in the South East Baghdad field. The state-owned company announced the achievement on Wednesday, September 2. The project marks another step toward expanding Iraq’s domestic drilling capabilities.

Technical and engineering teams completed work on horizontal well EBS-157. The operation used the IDC-36 drilling rig, which has a rated capacity of 1,500 horsepower. Engineers drilled the well to a total measured depth of 4,152 meters.

The well reached a maximum inclination of 90.31 degrees during drilling operations. This horizontal trajectory allows the well to maintain greater contact with the targeted reservoir. Engineers designed the drilling profile around the field’s geological and pressure conditions.

The project operated under directives from Oil Minister Bassem Mohammed Khudair Al-Abbadi. Iraqi Drilling Company Director General Mohammed Hantoosh Asad Al-Ozairjawi supervised the operation. The company described the project as an important technical achievement.

The drilling work forms part of a wider development program in the South East Baghdad field. The program comes under a multi-well contract involving EBS, a subsidiary of China’s ZhenHua Oil. The contract covers the drilling of 17 oil wells across the field.

China Oilfield Services Limited, known as COSL, provides technical collaboration under the project. The cooperation combines Iraqi engineering expertise with international drilling experience. It also supports the wider development of Iraq’s oil-producing assets.

Horizontal drilling requires advanced equipment and precise directional control. Engineers must carefully manage the well path while responding to changing underground conditions. The technique can improve reservoir access and support
