Prime Minister Masrour Barzani has officially opened the Dabin Cement Plant and Power Station in Erbil. This marks one of the Kurdistan Region’s biggest industrial projects to date. The facility lies at the foot of Mount Safin in Erbil Governorate.
Additionally, the project began nearly two years ago. On June 22, 2023, Barzani laid its foundation. At that time, he stressed his cabinet’s mission to grow Kurdistan’s industry. He urged government offices to cut red tape and support the private sector.
Now, that plan has become reality. The Dabin Cement Plant covers 212 dunams. Built by China Power Investment Corporation (PowerChina), the site follows international standards. It includes both a cement factory and a power station.
Therefore, the plant can produce up to 6,300 tons of cement daily. It uses limestone sourced from a quarry just one kilometer away. That site holds around 150 million tons of reserve. Experts say it will last at least 50 years.
Moreover, the plant’s industrial crusher processes crushed limestone at high speed, handling 1,400 tons every hour. Workers then store the output in four tall silos, each standing 56 meters high and holding 10,000 tons of cement. They separate the cement into two types: ordinary Portland and the specialty Cempto cement.
In addition, the attached power station produces 52 megawatts of electricity. This energy powers the plant and supports the regional grid. Thus, it helps ease pressure on Kurdistan’s electricity system.
Barzani called the Dabin Cement Plant a symbol of progress. During the ribbon-cutting, he said, “This is more than a factory. It is proof of our potential.” He noted that Kurdistan must shift away from oil and toward local production.
He also praised the workers, engineers, and planners behind the project. “We are building Kurdistan’s economic backbone,” Barzani said. “This backbone is powered by local resources and global know-how.”
The opening of the Dabin Cement Plant is a key moment for Kurdistan. It sets a new standard for future investments. It also proves the region can lead in modern industry and energy.
In conclusion, with strong planning, the project will boost economic growth, jobs, and regional self-reliance. More importantly, it shows Kurdistan’s commitment to becoming an industrial force in the Middle East.
