Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani launched the first phase of the Imam Hussein Roundabout project in Karbala. This major road development will reduce traffic congestion in the city and improve movement for both residents and visitors. The Iraq Karbala road project also forms part of the city’s broader plan to handle its growing population.
The new road will stretch 9.2 kilometers and cost over 400 billion Iraqi dinars, equal to about $307 million. It is the first of three planned ring roads in Karbala. Together, these three roads will span 27 kilometers and create smoother traffic flow.
Engineers designed the road to meet high standards. The plan divides the project into six sections, each with a width of around 60 meters. Workers will build 13 intersections to improve access. They will also construct three large overpasses named Al-Jaber, Baghdad, and Al-Rushdiya. These structures will allow vehicles to move quickly across busy points without delays.
Prime Minister Al-Sudani stressed the value of the Iraq Karbala road project during religious occasions. Karbala attracts millions of visitors every year, especially during important religious events. Heavy traffic during these times causes long delays. The new road will give drivers alternative routes, making travel safer and faster.
The project supports Karbala’s growth as a major cultural and religious center. The city needs more modern infrastructure to match its rising importance. Government planners included this development in the governorate’s master plan to prepare for future demands.
