Iraq Expands Diwaniya Refinery with Major Upgrade

Iraq has started a major expansion of the Diwaniya Refinery to boost its fuel production. This expansion includes a new processing unit with a capacity of 70,000 barrels per day.

With this upgrade, the Diwaniya Refinery’s total capacity will soon reach 90,000 barrels per day. Officials say this project will help Iraq reduce its reliance on imported fuel.

The Oil Ministry confirmed its strong focus on growing Iraq’s refinery production. Minister Hayan Abdul Ghani stressed the need for more local fuel output. He said Iraq plans to meet strict global fuel standards, such as Euro 5.

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani officially launched the Diwaniya Refinery expansion. He attended the event remotely via video link, while key officials joined the event in person.

Deputy Minister for Refining Affairs Adnan Mohammed Hammoud led the start of the construction. Haitham Ibrahim Mohsen, Director General of the Midland Refineries Company, also attended the launch.

The Diwaniya Refinery project includes many new facilities. These include the main 70,000-barrel-per-day processing unit and an 18,000-barrel-per-day hydrotreating unit. The refinery will also gain a unit for gasoline upgrades and isomerisation, plus an LPG production unit.

Additionally, the project includes new storage tanks, water treatment systems, and pipelines. These additions will support smooth operation and boost fuel safety.

Once finished, the Diwaniya Refinery will produce many vital fuels. The outputs will include Euro 5 gasoline, naphtha, kerosene, gasoil, fuel oil, and LPG.

Officials explained that the new project also targets job creation in the local community. Many people in Diwaniya will benefit from construction work and long-term jobs after completion.

The government expects this refinery to improve Iraq’s energy security. It will also help the country meet its growing demand for fuel.

In addition, the project fits into Iraq’s wider energy plan. Leaders want to boost domestic production and stop importing key fuel products.

According to officials, the full completion of the Diwaniya Refinery expansion should take about five years.

The Diwaniya Refinery upgrade shows Iraq’s commitment to better energy solutions. This project will help modernize fuel supplies and reduce costs for the Iraqi people.
