Iraq Approves Starlink License as US Welcomes Major Digital Expansion

Baghdad – Iraq has taken a significant step toward strengthening its digital infrastructure after approving an operating license for Starlink. The decision clears the way for the satellite internet provider to enter the Iraqi market and expand connectivity across the country. Officials from both Iraq and the United States welcomed the move, describing it as an important milestone for Iraq’s digital transformation strategy.

The announcement followed a meeting in Baghdad between US Special Presidential Envoy Tom Barrack and Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi. During the talks, both sides discussed ways to deepen cooperation between the two countries in technology, investment, and economic development. They also highlighted the importance of expanding access to advanced digital services.

The approval allows Starlink to begin offering its satellite-based internet services in Iraq. The company operates through Starlink Services LLC, a subsidiary of the aerospace company SpaceX. Its network uses satellites in low Earth orbit to provide internet coverage, particularly in areas where traditional infrastructure remains limited.

Iraqi officials believe the move will support efforts to modernize the country’s communications sector. Improved internet access could benefit businesses, educational institutions, government services, and remote communities. The decision also aligns with broader plans to upgrade Iraq’s technology landscape and encourage innovation.

The digital transformation strategy has become a key priority for Iraqi policymakers in recent years. Authorities have sought to attract major international technology companies and create a more competitive digital economy. Officials view partnerships with global firms as an important tool for accelerating development and improving public services.

Interest in bringing Starlink to Iraq dates back several years. In 2025, former Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani met representatives from the company to discuss opportunities for cooperation. During those discussions, he emphasized Iraq’s growing economy and highlighted investment opportunities across several sectors.

Al-Sudani also encouraged government agencies to facilitate procedures for major technology investors. His administration promoted policies designed to attract foreign companies and strengthen collaboration with Iraq’s private sector. These efforts aimed to position the country as a more attractive destination for international investment.

Supporters of the project argue that satellite internet could help bridge connectivity gaps in underserved regions. Faster and more reliable internet access may create new opportunities for businesses and individuals while supporting economic growth. The expansion of digital services could also strengthen Iraq’s ability to compete in an increasingly connected global economy.

As Starlink prepares to enter the market, officials hope the decision will encourage additional technology investments. The approval represents another step in Iraq’s digital transformation strategy, reinforcing efforts to modernize infrastructure and expand access to advanced communications services. Many observers see the move as a positive signal for future cooperation between Iraq and leading global technology firms.
