Iraq’s Grand Faw Port is moving closer to full operation as construction rapidly advances. The massive port project in Basra represents one of the country’s most important infrastructure developments in decades. According to Nasser Al-Asadi, the Prime Minister’s Advisor for Transport Affairs, work on the port has entered its final stage, bringing Iraq a step closer to becoming a regional trade hub.
The progress at Grand Faw Port marks a turning point for Iraq’s maritime and trade ambitions. Three of the port’s five key projects are now complete, showing remarkable speed and precision in execution. All five docks are ready and have already welcomed experimental ships, signaling that full operations could begin soon. Teams are currently focusing on the finishing touches to prepare the port for official activation.
Furthermore, Al-Asadi highlighted several essential infrastructure components that support the port’s functionality. The immersed tunnel, one of the project’s most complex engineering feats, has reached an advanced phase. Seven of ten massive concrete sections are already submerged, and the rest will follow shortly. This tunnel will connect the port to the mainland, ensuring smooth movement of goods and people.
Equally important, the connecting roads are now 100% complete, providing seamless transport between the Grand Faw Port and other Iraqi ports. This connectivity will make logistics faster and more efficient. In addition, the maritime channel dredging continues at an advanced pace to accommodate large cargo ships. The handling and reception yards are also nearing completion after extensive soil testing and reclamation.
In terms of management and operation, Iraq is finalizing a strategic partnership with Abu Dhabi Ports Company. This agreement will help ensure that Grand Faw Port operates under global standards of efficiency and competitiveness. Negotiations are in the final phase, and officials expect the contract to be signed soon. This partnership will also enhance Iraq’s position in international trade and attract further investment.
Al-Asadi added that the Development Road project, a key part of Iraq’s broader economic plan, continues to progress alongside the port. This initiative includes industrial zones, renewable energy facilities, and agricultural projects that will operate independently yet connect to the Grand Faw Port network. These developments together will reshape Iraq’s transport and trade landscape.
Overall, Grand Faw Port stands as a symbol of Iraq’s economic renewal and ambition. Once operational, it will not only boost trade revenues but also create thousands of jobs and stimulate growth across multiple sectors. Iraq is on the verge of entering a new era of connectivity, development, and regional influence.
