Basra has signed a major energy deal with TotalEnergies, QatarEnergy, and the Basra Oil Company to develop the Artawi oilfield. The agreement is part of the Gas Growth Integrated Project (GGIP), a multibillion-dollar plan designed to expand electricity supply and reduce gas flaring. This landmark energy deal strengthens regional cooperation and promotes modern energy practices.
The GGIP focuses on recovering associated gas from oilfields to generate electricity and support sustainable energy development. In addition, the project includes a large-scale gas processing plant and the development of renewable energy projects. By reducing wasted gas, the initiative improves power generation and supports environmental goals.
Furthermore, the plan includes the Common Seawater Supply Project (CSSP), which will deliver around five million barrels of seawater daily to southern oilfields. This step maintains reservoir pressure, sustains production, and enhances overall oilfield efficiency. The CSSP represents a crucial component of the landmark energy deal, demonstrating the commitment to modern infrastructure.
The project involves multiple international partners. ENKA, a Turkish firm, will lead the construction of a central oil and gas processing facility. Meanwhile, engineering firms from China and South Korea will contribute to the gas and water infrastructure. Basra’s Oil Minister emphasized that the agreement boosts energy independence and diversifies partnerships. TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanné called the deal a milestone for sustainable energy development. QatarEnergy highlighted the value of regional cooperation for energy security.
The GGIP also addresses growing domestic demand for electricity and reduces reliance on imported gas. By capturing flared gas, Iraq cuts waste, improves efficiency, and supports environmental protection.
