Iraq Begins Construction of Basra Sun Solar Power Plant

Iraq has officially started building Basra Sun, the country’s largest solar power plant, located in Basra province. The project, which will have a total capacity of 1,000 megawatts (MW), marks a significant step toward the country’s renewable energy goals.

The Basra Sun plant will be constructed in phases. The facility will consist of four separate 250 MW units, which will be developed throughout the duration of the project. Excavation work has already begun on the site, which spans 9,000 dunams of land in the Basra desert.

The plant is a key part of the Gas Growth Integrated Project (GGIP), a joint venture formed by TotalEnergies, Basra Oil Company (BOC), and QatarEnergy. TotalEnergies holds the largest share, with 45%, while BOC owns 30% and QatarEnergy controls 25%. The project is designed to address Iraq’s growing energy needs while advancing the country’s transition to renewable energy.

The solar power plant will play an essential role in diversifying Iraq’s energy sources. It aligns with the country’s broader strategy to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and expand its use of cleaner energy. Solar power is seen as a promising solution, given Iraq’s abundant sunlight, especially in areas like Basra.

Once completed, the Basra Sun solar plant will contribute significantly to Iraq’s electricity generation capacity. The project is expected to help reduce power shortages, improve energy stability, and support economic growth in the region.

Additionally, this solar power plant is part of Iraq’s efforts to reduce its environmental impact. As the world increasingly turns to renewable energy, Iraq is positioning itself to take advantage of this global shift. The Basra Sun project also supports the country’s goal of creating a more sustainable and diversified energy sector.

In conclusion, the Basra Sun solar power plant is an ambitious project that will significantly boost Iraq’s energy infrastructure. With a 1,000 MW capacity, the plant represents a major leap toward Iraq’s renewable energy future. It will not only help meet Iraq’s power needs but also strengthen the country’s position in the global energy market.
