Japanese Vehicle Imports Drive Iraqi Auto Market Forward

Japanese vehicle imports to Iraq crossed $700 million, showing strong demand for cars and bikes from Japan. Trade records revealed that Iraq imported $712.5 million in Japanese cars, motorcycles, and auto accessories. These figures made up 16% of Japan’s total auto exports worldwide.

Passenger cars formed the biggest share of Japanese vehicle imports. Iraq received 17,994 units worth $612.3 million. Also, the country imported 2,156 commercial trucks worth $51.7 million. Additionally, Iraq brought in 3,201 specialized vehicles and auto parts worth $39.4 million.

Meanwhile, motorcycles and bicycles made up a smaller portion. Iraq imported 236,477 units, valued at $8 million. The list also included 510 mobility-related items like strollers and disability carts, totaling just over $1 million.

Although Japanese vehicle imports dominate, South Korean brand Kia surged ahead in early 2025. During the first quarter, Kia led vehicle sales with a 26.1% increase. On the other hand, Toyota dropped to second place after a 3.4% decline in sales.

MG, a British-Chinese brand, ranked third with a massive 57.1% growth. Nissan climbed fast as well, surging 1,463.6% to take fourth place. In contrast, Suzuki saw a 34.6% drop and landed in fifth position.

In terms of top-selling models, the Toyota Hilux kept its crown. It grew 10.3% in Q1 2025 and remained Iraq’s favorite. Close behind, the Kia Frontier posted a 12.7% rise in sales, keeping strong momentum.

Electric vehicle demand also increased in Iraq. EV sales jumped by 41.6% in the first quarter. Although still just 3% of all vehicle sales, this number is rising. Experts expect more growth as Iraq seeks to reduce its oil dependence.

Toyota ruled the electric market too. It held 97% of EV sales, far ahead of Lexus and Land Rover. These trends suggest Iraq is slowly embracing clean transportation alternatives.

Japanese vehicle imports continue to play a major role in Iraq’s growing automotive sector. Despite new players and rising EV trends, Japan’s footprint remains solid. As the market evolves, choices will expand—but loyalty to Japanese brands runs deep.
