WFP Scales Back Refugee Aid Amid Urgent Funding Gaps in Iraq

WFP Iraq humanitarian update shows growing concern as funding shortfalls force cuts to refugee food assistance. In June 2025, the World Food Programme (WFP) concluded food support to over 38,000 Syrian refugees across nine camps in Iraq. This marked the end of distributions due to limited funds.

WFP used SMS messages, camp management, and community outreach to inform families of the final round. Without urgent funding, the agency cannot continue refugee support beyond June or maintain assistance at the Al-Amal Rehabilitation Centre past December.

In total, 4,574 people received assistance through recent efforts. WFP made USD 1.3 million in cash-based transfers, helping both camp residents and vulnerable host communities. However, WFP still faces a net funding gap of USD 8.6 million for the second half of the year.

In June, WFP distributed e-vouchers to more than 6,000 people (1,705 households) in Al-Amal Rehabilitation Centre, located in Ninewa Governorate. This site, formerly called Jed’ah 1, now houses many returnees and residents with limited access to services.

At the same time, WFP delivered cash assistance to over 8,000 individuals (1,791 households) across Baghdad, Salah Al-Din, Kirkuk, Ninewa, Diyala, and Babel. These recipients lacked civil documents and often fall outside official support systems.

On June 25, WFP joined a UN delegation to the Al-Amal site. The visit was led by Ghulam Mohammad Isaczai, Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General and UN Resident Coordinator. WFP staff shared details about monthly cash distributions, including registration, delivery systems, and targeting methods.

These operations highlight the urgent need for sustained funding. Without renewed support, thousands could lose access to basic food and financial relief in the coming months.

WFP Iraq humanitarian update underscores how financial gaps directly affect displaced families. The agency continues to advocate for more contributions to bridge current shortfalls and protect the most vulnerable.
