Iraq’s Power Sector Grows with Dora Power Plant Upgrade

Iraq continues to strengthen its energy network through a major power plant upgrade project in Baghdad. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani launched the development at the Dora Thermal Power Plant, where workers will rehabilitate two old units and install two new ones. Each unit will generate 160 MW, adding a total of 640 MW to the country’s power grid.

During the event, the Prime Minister explained the project’s strategic importance. He emphasized the plant’s central location in Baghdad and its direct access to fuel from the nearby Dora Refinery. Engineers will operate the plant under strict environmental rules.

Al-Sudani confirmed the government’s full commitment to energy independence. He announced that Iraq will secure enough gas to power all current and future stations by the end of 2027. He also praised the national effort to supply fuel without interruption.

In addition, he Prime Minister highlighted the Ministry of Electricity’s success in keeping electricity levels steady. The ministry launched a decongestion program that improved power flow across the transmission and distribution systems. This plan helped reduce overloads and ensured smoother energy delivery.

Iraq is also moving forward in renewable energy. Al-Sudani said new solar energy projects will launch within the next year. These projects will help reduce pressure on fossil fuels and bring clean energy to more people.

The team will connect the upgraded units to the 132 kV grid in the Karkh area of Baghdad. This move will support stronger electricity distribution and meet growing demand in the capital. Workers will complete the rehabilitation in phases to avoid shutting down power during the process. Fuel from the nearby refinery will support continuous operation.

Moreover, Dubai-based company Al-Nukhba OFS will carry out the entire power plant upgrade project. This firm brings experience in energy infrastructure and aims to deliver the project on time and with high quality.

In conclusion, Iraq’s energy plans reflect a strong drive for self-reliance and future-ready infrastructure. The Dora upgrade strengthens both production and distribution. As Iraq builds on this progress, the country moves closer to energy security and stability.
