Iraqi Prime Minister Begins High-Stakes Washington Visit

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi departed Baghdad on Monday for an official visit to the United States. The trip places the Iraq-US strategic partnership at the center of Baghdad’s diplomatic agenda. Al-Zaidi traveled with senior government representatives and an economic delegation. Officials expect the meetings to cover investment, energy, and security cooperation.

The Prime Minister’s Office said the visit seeks stronger ties with Washington. Both governments want to expand their cooperation beyond traditional political discussions. Energy agreements could form a major part of the program. Iraqi officials hope American companies will support higher oil and gas production.

Al-Zaidi plans to meet President Donald Trump during the visit. As well as, their talks will focus on reshaping bilateral relations through economic and security cooperation. Baghdad sees investment as an important path toward greater stability. Washington remains a major international partner for Iraq’s energy sector.

Government spokesperson Haider al-Aboudi said Iraq expects to sign memoranda with American corporations. These agreements could help the country raise its oil production capacity. However, they may also support new projects across the gas industry. Iraqi leaders want deals that create practical benefits for the national economy.

Export security will likely receive close attention during the Washington meetings. As well as, officials want alternatives that reduce reliance on vulnerable shipping routes. Recent disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz affected regional oil revenues. Iraq and neighboring producers faced lower income after the route’s closure.

The discussions also come during heightened tensions between Iran and the United States. Iraq has worked to preserve working relationships with both countries. Baghdad often faces pressure from competing regional interests. The Iraq-US strategic partnership must therefore advance without upsetting Iraq’s wider diplomatic balance.

Security cooperation will remain another key topic for Al-Zaidi’s delegation. Al-Aboudi said the prime minister will discuss stronger capabilities for Iraq’s armed forces. Iraqi leaders want equipment, training, and planning support that meets national needs. They also seek security arrangements that respect Iraq’s sovereignty.

The Washington visit could shape Iraq’s economic direction for years. New energy investments may increase production and strengthen export resilience. A broader Iraq-US strategic partnership could also give Baghdad more room to manage regional uncertainty. After Washington, Al-Zaidi plans to visit Turkey, Iran, and Saudi Arabia.
