Iraq Launches Two New Colleges to Drive Academic Innovation

Iraq Higher Education modernisation begins with the launch of two new colleges at the University of Baghdad. The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research has announced the creation of the College of Excellence and the College of Artificial Intelligence. Both colleges will begin offering programs in the 2025/2026 academic year.

This initiative comes under the direct order of Higher Education Minister Dr. Naeem Abd Yaser Al-Aboudi. He aims to reform Iraq’s academic system by introducing cutting-edge programs that support digital transformation and the growth of knowledge-based industries.

The College of Excellence will include diverse departments such as Applied Information Systems, Data Science, E-Business Management, Accounting and Banking, Philosophy, and Sociology. These fields will help students build skills needed in modern markets while also promoting critical thinking and social understanding.

At the same time, the College of Artificial Intelligence will focus on practical AI applications. It will offer programs in engineering-focused AI, biomedical AI, and big data analytics. These areas reflect Iraq’s ambition to join global efforts in advanced technology and innovation.

Minister Al-Aboudi has set a clear timeline for launching both colleges. He expects all staffing, logistics, and infrastructure needs to be completed by 20 August 2025. The Ministry’s Directorate of Studies, Planning and Follow-up will design the admissions process. Their goal is to attract capable students and foster learning environments that match international standards.

Iraq higher education modernisation begins not just with buildings and programs but with a complete shift in academic direction. These colleges will focus on real-world applications, data-driven decision-making, and strategic development. As a result, students will gain tools to thrive in Iraq’s evolving economy.

The government believes these new institutions will help bridge the gap between education and the job market. They will also prepare Iraq’s youth to take part in regional and global knowledge economies.

Iraq higher education modernisation begins with this strong step forward, setting the stage for future reforms in universities across the country.
