Iraq continues to push forward with its energy strategy by growing its operations at the Zubair oilfield. The Iraqi Drilling Company (IDC) added a second rig, IDC-56, to speed up progress. This move supports Iraq’s oilfield growth plan and reflects the country’s focus on domestic energy production.
Previously, IDC launched operations at Zubair using rig IDC-51. Now, the second rig boosts drilling capacity and shortens project timelines. This step helps Iraq meet growing energy needs while building national infrastructure.
Italy’s ENI leads the development project at Zubair. Schlumberger, a global oilfield service provider, supports the effort with technical expertise. Together, the companies and IDC aim to drill 35 new wells at the site.
IDC’s Director General, Eng. Hassan Mohammed Hassan, explained the importance of this expansion. He noted that the company follows top international standards for safety and efficiency. He also highlighted IDC’s strong role in Iraq’s oilfield growth plan.
Zubair oilfield sits in the southern province of Basra. The site holds large reserves that Iraq wants to tap for both local use and exports. Increasing output from Zubair helps the country reduce import reliance and raise national income.
In addition, this project strengthens partnerships between Iraq and international energy firms. By working with ENI and Schlumberger, Iraq gains modern tools and industry knowledge. These partnerships also support technology transfer and workforce training.
Moreover, the Ministry of Oil continues to back IDC’s efforts across key oil sites. Officials aim to raise output through smart planning and local company leadership. The second rig shows clear commitment to Iraq’s oilfield growth plan.
The drilling activity at Zubair also creates jobs for Iraqi workers. More rigs mean more training, employment, and experience for local teams. The government wants to use this model to develop other oilfields across Iraq.
As the country strengthens its energy base, projects like this shape long-term stability. Iraq sees oilfield development as a core path to economic growth and national independence.
Looking ahead, Iraq plans to expand its drilling network even further. The work at Zubair shows how Iraq’s oilfield growth plan continues to succeed through action and partnerships.
