Development Road Project Iraq Moves Forward with First Section Complete

Iraq marked a major milestone as the Development Road project Iraq completed its first section. This important step strengthens Iraq’s push to improve cargo transport and regional connectivity. The General Company for Ports confirmed the progress and started the official handover process.

According to Director Farhan Al-Fartousi, the new road features three dedicated lanes. These lanes will serve heavy trucks and cargo traffic only. As a result, the route will improve freight movement and ease traffic on public roads.

The completed stretch begins at the Grand Al-Faw Port and continues to a key submerged tunnel. This first leg spans 51 kilometers, connecting one of Iraq’s most strategic ports to the national transport grid. From the tunnel, the road extends another 11 kilometers to reach the main Safwan road. Altogether, the total length of this initial section is 62 kilometers.

The Development Road project Iraq is central to the country’s economic transformation. It aims to link southern Iraq to Turkey and Europe, turning Iraq into a vital trade hub. Therefore, each completed section brings Iraq closer to that goal. It also creates new logistics opportunities and job growth in transport sectors.

Officials stressed the project’s importance for both imports and exports. With Grand Al-Faw Port as the starting point, Iraq will now move goods faster to inland and foreign markets. In addition, dedicated cargo lanes will reduce delays caused by mixed traffic.

The Development Road project Iraq will continue in stages. Authorities will expand the route to other parts of the country in the coming months. Each section will follow strict construction standards to ensure durability and safety. Teams are also preparing support services like rest stops, maintenance zones, and customs checkpoints.

Al-Fartousi noted that technical teams are working daily to meet deadlines. The project relies on strong cooperation between engineering firms and government bodies. More handovers will follow as each segment passes inspections.

Looking ahead, Iraq hopes the full road will open major trade corridors. By offering direct routes from sea ports to borders, the project improves Iraq’s global trade standing. Investors are already watching closely, with logistics firms preparing to use the new lanes.
