Iraq announced plans to expand the Samawah refinery capacity output to 100,000 barrels per day as part of its national strategy to enhance refining operations and meet growing local demand. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani confirmed the decision during the opening of a new oil products storage facility in the southern province of Muthanna.
The Samawah storage facility, with a total capacity of 75,000 cubic meters, is a key part of the government’s plan to strengthen Iraq refinery capacity and support stable fuel distribution across the country. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the completion of this facility will make Muthanna a reliable hub for oil derivatives production and supply.
Prime Minister al-Sudani stated that the project will ensure smooth and continuous operations at the Samawah refinery, which currently produces 30,000 barrels per day. The planned expansion will increase refining capacity by an additional 70,000 barrels per day, a significant boost for both local and national energy needs.
Al-Sudani stressed that increasing Iraq refinery capacity is a top priority in the government’s economic development strategy. He noted that improving refining output will reduce Iraq’s dependence on imported fuel and enhance self-sufficiency in the energy sector.
He added that the government remains committed to developing vital infrastructure such as pipelines, storage tanks, and distribution systems. Many of these projects have already been completed in several provinces, while others are still under construction.
The Prime Minister emphasized that this expansion aligns with Iraq’s broader vision to modernize its oil industry, increase productivity, and strengthen the downstream sector. By focusing on regional projects like Samawah, Baghdad aims to boost Iraq refinery capacity, create jobs, and secure long-term energy stability for its citizens.
