Iraq’s national airline, Iraqi Airways, is moving closer to flying again in European skies. The country’s aviation sector is undergoing major modernization to meet the European Union’s safety and compliance standards. The progress shows Iraq’s determination to rebuild trust and strengthen its global aviation connections.
At the Iraq Transport, Logistics & Airports Exhibition in Baghdad, Transport Minister Razzaq Muhaibis announced that Iraq has fulfilled nearly 78 percent of the EU’s safety requirements. So, These standards, established several years ago, have guided Iraq’s effort to raise aviation safety and service quality. By steadily improving operations, Iraq hopes to see the EU flight ban on Iraqi Airways lifted soon.
The heart of this transformation lies in fleet expansion. However, iraqi Airways has added more than ten new aircraft, forming part of a deal with Boeing and Airbus. This brings the airline’s total number of active planes to more than forty. As well as, the company also plans to reach fifty-three aircraft by 2027. Each addition improves operational capacity, enhances passenger comfort, and increases international competitiveness.
The focus on modernization extends beyond the fleet. Iraq continues to upgrade its airports to support the country’s growing aviation needs. Nasiriyah and Mosul airports have seen major improvements, increasing their capacity and safety systems. Baghdad International Airport is also expanding to serve up to fifteen million passengers a year—almost double its previous capacity. These upgrades will help Iraq handle future increases in domestic and international travel.
Furthermore, Iraqi Airways aims to expand routes once European restrictions are lifted. The airline plans to reopen direct flights to major destinations across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. This expansion will reconnect Iraq with key global markets, boost tourism, and enhance trade opportunities. Every new route will help Iraq strengthen economic ties and showcase its growing aviation capabilities.
The return of Iraqi Airways to EU skies will mark a major achievement for Iraq’s transport sector. It reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to improve safety, efficiency, and international credibility. Through consistent reforms, Iraq demonstrates a clear commitment to meeting international aviation standards and building a stronger future for its national carrier.
