Iraq declared Babylon as the Industrial Capital of Iraq, a move that signals a new chapter in national growth. Prime Minister Mohammed Shiaa Al-Sudani announced the decision during a major event in the province. He explained that this recognition reflects Babylon’s growing role in shaping the country’s economy.

The ceremony highlighted new projects that will fuel the province’s industrial rise. The Prime Minister opened a plastic ampoules and caps factory with a capacity of 120,000 tonnes each year. He also launched a flexographic printing plant that can produce 35,000 tonnes yearly. In addition, he started construction of a plastic granules factory with an annual capacity of 300,000 tonnes. These projects belong to the private sector and show how investors now drive industrial momentum.

Al-Sudani stressed the importance of Babylon’s location, rich farmland, and strong business environment. He pointed out that these qualities make the province ideal for industry. Moreover, he noted that 54 Iraqi factories already export their goods to regional and global markets. At the same time, factories in Iraq supply sugar, oil, cement, fertilisers, pharmaceuticals, rebar, and chemicals to local customers.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister explained that Iraq must reduce its heavy reliance on oil. He said that industry plays a central role in creating jobs and securing fresh income. Non-oil revenues now contribute 14 percent of state income, compared with only 7 percent in the past. He described this improvement as a strong signal of progress and stability.

In addition, Al-Sudani underlined the need to keep machines running across Iraq. He declared that “the sound of factories must remain the loudest in Iraq.” He linked the growth of Babylon with the country’s wider Vision 2050 plan. This vision aims to build a diverse and sustainable economy where industry leads the path forward.

Through this step, Iraq shows determination to strengthen industry and provide opportunities for future generations. The choice of Babylon as the Industrial Capital of Iraq reflects confidence in its capacity to inspire progress. With its growing factories and exports, the province demonstrates how Iraq can create jobs, attract investment, and move beyond oil dependency.
