Iraq Solar Power Project Boosts Clean Energy in Basra

Iraq has launched a major clean energy initiative with the Basra solar energy project now under construction in the southern province. The project is a joint effort between the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity and French energy company TotalEnergies. It aims to generate 1,000 megawatts of solar power and marks a major step toward Iraq’s renewable energy goals.

Electricity Minister Ziyad Ali Fadel confirmed the project supports the clean energy strategy. Builders will install over two million solar panels on 9,000 dunams of Basra desert.

The Basra solar energy project is part of a broader $27 billion agreement with TotalEnergies. The package also includes efforts to harness associated gas, develop the Artawi oil field, and strengthen energy infrastructure in southern Iraq. These combined projects aim to reduce Iraq’s dependence on imported electricity and lower harmful emissions.

Minister Fadel stressed the solar project’s role in meeting peak summer power demand. Iraq faces regular power shortages during these periods, often resulting in public frustration and economic losses. The project will improve grid stability in Basra and provide cleaner, more reliable power.

The solar plant is one of the largest renewable energy undertakings in Iraq’s history. By diversifying the energy mix, it also opens the door for further investment in solar and wind power. Iraqi officials say they want to attract more international companies to develop the country’s vast potential in sustainable energy.

The Basra solar energy project reflects a shift in national energy policy.Iraq, a top oil producer, is shifting toward a cleaner energy future. The government plans to ease grid pressure, cut carbon emissions, and create jobs in solar technology.

This project is more than a power plant—it’s a symbol of Iraq’s energy transformation. With strong support and partnerships, Iraq is turning its deserts into centers of progress and energy security.
