Baghdad has reaffirmed its strong commitment to Iraq NATO cooperation as a new general takes charge of the NATO Mission in Iraq (NMI). Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani emphasized the importance of this partnership during his meeting with both the incoming and outgoing NATO commanders.
Major General Christophe Hintzy is now the new leader of NMI, replacing Lieutenant General Lucas Schreurs. Al-Sudani welcomed the new commander and thanked Schreurs for his service. The meeting also focused on deepening Iraq NATO cooperation and preparing for the next round of talks between Iraq and the alliance.
The Iraqi leader confirmed that Baghdad will continue to support NMI’s advisory role. He stressed that Iraq values NATO’s help in building effective and professional armed forces. The mission plays a non-combat role, helping Iraq improve its military systems and security institutions.
This new stage of Iraq NATO cooperation comes as international coalition forces gradually leave Iraq. The Prime Minister wants future relations with NATO to focus on bilateral ties. These would involve NATO members that were part of the coalition against ISIS.
Last year, Iraq and NATO held the first round of talks in Brussels. The second round is now being planned in Baghdad. Al-Sudani said both sides should create a joint committee. Iraq’s National Security Advisor will lead Iraq’s team in these discussions. The goal is to find the best frameworks for long-term cooperation.
The Iraqi government is focused on strengthening military partnerships while protecting national sovereignty. Al-Sudani believes Iraq NATO cooperation will help Iraq reach full security independence. He also supports turning Iraq into a regional model for defense reform and stability.
The NATO Mission in Iraq began in 2018 at Iraq’s request. Since then, it has provided strategic advice, technical support, and training. It does not take part in combat, but its work helps Iraq build lasting peace and stronger institutions.
In summary, Iraq NATO cooperation is growing stronger. Baghdad fully supports the mission and welcomes the new commander. Talks and training will continue as both sides work toward a more secure future.
