Iraq has achieved a major environmental success by planting mangrove trees along the Shatt al-Arab coastline in Basra. The Basra Directorate of Agriculture fully supported the Ministry of Agriculture as it confirmed the planting of the trees in the Ras al-Bisha area.
The project was managed by local experts and backed by the Ministry. Officials provided all the resources needed to ensure the smooth launch and progress of this important effort. In addition the Iraq mangrove trees project reflects the country’s growing interest in sustainable environmental solutions.
Dr. Lubna Ali, who leads the Horticulture and Forestry Division in Basra, gave details on the project. She explained that work began in 2019, with the goal of introducing mangroves into local ecosystems. Additionaly Since then, the team has succeeded in raising mangrove plants in special nurseries.
The Ministry of Agriculture officially approved and fully supported the planting of over 1,000 mangrove trees along the Basra coastline. Workers planted these trees in carefully chosen areas.
This Iraq mangrove trees project will bring many benefits. One of the main advantages is coastal protection. Mangroves help stop erosion by holding the soil with their roots. As well as this is especially important for vulnerable areas like Ras al-Bisha, where sea levels and strong waves can damage the shore.
Another benefit is the creation of rich marine habitats. Mangrove forests attract birds, protect fish, and support other aquatic life. By planting these trees, Iraq aims to improve biodiversity and promote long-term fish conservation.
Additionally, the trees add more green space, which improves air quality and creates a healthier coastal environment. They also play a part in fighting climate change. In addition mangroves can reduce temperatures and absorb large amounts of carbon dioxide.
Local communities are expected to benefit from this project too. The planted areas could support eco-tourism, fishing, and other sustainable activities. As the trees grow, the surrounding environment will become stronger and more stable.
Iraq’s success in growing mangroves shows that environmental progress is possible with proper planning and support. However People now see the Iraq mangrove trees project as a model for future efforts across the country, especially in other coastal and river regions.
The Ministry of Agriculture plans to expand this project and bring its benefits to more locations. So it will also continue supporting local teams and protecting Iraq’s natural resources for future generations.
