Iraq-Libya oil cooperation is gaining momentum as Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC) confirmed its full readiness to strengthen ties with Iraq in the oil and energy sector. This development follows a key meeting in Tripoli between top officials from both countries. The talks focused on building stronger technical and institutional partnerships in energy, signaling a new phase of collaboration between Baghdad and Tripoli in regional energy development.
Ahmed Al-Sahhaf, Chargé d’Affaires at the Iraqi Embassy in Libya, met with Masoud Suleiman, Chairman of Libya’s NOC. Both sides discussed ways to expand cooperation in oil production, energy development, and technical training.
During the meeting, Al-Sahhaf highlighted Iraq’s achievements in oil production. He reviewed recent progress in contracts with global energy firms and outlined Iraq’s goal of developing its oil infrastructure and capacity.
Suleiman praised Iraq’s efforts in the energy sector and expressed strong interest in formal partnerships. He supported signing a memorandum of understanding between Iraq and Libya. This agreement would focus on training, capacity building, and long-term knowledge exchange.
The Iraq-Libya oil cooperation agenda includes linking Iraq’s Petroleum Institute with its Libyan counterpart. Suleiman said this partnership should cover joint research, student exchanges, and shared industry studies.
Moreover, Libya invited Iraqi experts to Tripoli. Suleiman stressed that Iraqis have historically played a major role in Libya’s oil development. He described them as key contributors to Libya’s production and workforce training over several decades.
The NOC chairman emphasized his intention to visit Baghdad soon. He said the visit would help reach deeper agreements and unlock new opportunities in joint oil initiatives. Both countries view this renewed relationship as a way to advance regional cooperation.
The Iraq-Libya oil cooperation effort aligns with wider goals to modernize energy systems.
