The Iraq green and digital growth movement is gaining new energy as the Iraq Development Fund joins forces with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ). Together, they signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen the economy and create more opportunities for young Iraqis. Their partnership aims to promote digital innovation and support environmentally friendly projects that shape Iraq’s future economy.
Mohammed Al-Najjar, Executive Director of the Iraq Development Fund, said the agreement will bring a major improvement to the national economy. He noted that GIZ has invested almost one billion dollars in Iraq since 2014, focusing on human and economic development. Through this new partnership, the two sides will combine resources to empower young people and help the government move toward a more sustainable and modern economic system.
Al-Najjar added that this collaboration opens many new doors for youth across Iraq. It connects financial support with training programs that build confidence, develop skills, and inspire innovation. These efforts will encourage more young Iraqis to start businesses, explore digital technology, and contribute to eco-friendly projects. As a result, more people can participate in the Iraq green and digital growth process.
Meanwhile, Jörn Broihans, GIZ’s representative, explained that the project aims to increase jobs in the green and digital sectors. The German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development funds the initiative, while additional talks are ongoing with the European Union for further financial support.
The project focuses on four main goals. First, it strengthens micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), which form the backbone of Iraq’s economy. Second, it builds the capacity of small business owners and individuals through training and mentoring. Third, it improves access to financial services so that entrepreneurs can turn their ideas into successful businesses. Finally, it develops better political systems and laws to support digital and green growth across the country.
By combining international experience with local energy, this partnership encourages innovation and long-term stability. It also improves Iraq’s ability to compete in global markets while reducing environmental challenges. With clear strategies and shared goals, both sides aim to transform Iraq into a hub for sustainable and digital progress.
In conclusion, the Iraq green and digital growth partnership between the Iraq Development Fund and GIZ represents a vital step toward a modern, inclusive, and eco-friendly economy. It gives young Iraqis the tools, funding, and skills to shape the nation’s future.
