On March 4, 2025, the National Investment Commission (NIC) met with KBR to discuss the development of Iraq’s first blue ammonia plant in Basra.
The plant will utilize blue hydrogen, produced by steam methane reforming (SMR) with carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology, to ensure environmental sustainability.
Chaired by Dr. Haider Mohammed Makia, the meeting focused on the technical and economic aspects of the project. Dr. Makia emphasized its potential to support Iraq’s clean energy transition, boost industrial investment, and create new job opportunities. He also noted that the plant could position Iraq as a regional hub for sustainable industries.
The meeting was attended by key figures, including Dr. Muna Sabah Al-Jabari, Chair of the Renewable Energy Technical Committee, as well as representatives from the Ministries of Industry and Minerals, Higher Education and Scientific Research, NIC, and the Scientific Research Authority.
Discussions covered the integration of technology, adherence to global carbon reduction standards, and KBR’s expertise in similar international projects. The plant, which will be the third of its kind in the region, promises significant economic and environmental benefits for Iraq.
