Iraq has taken a major step to strengthen its electricity supply. Prime Minister Mohammed al-Sudani launched a new 300 MW unit at the Bismayah gas-fired power plant. The Bismayah plant is one of the country’s largest power facilities. It was built in partnership with GE and Turkiye’s ENKA. Energy experts highlight that the added power is crucial to reduce summer shortages. Iraq experiences heavy demand during hot months, which often strains the network.

At present, Iraq’s power network produces around 26,000 MW during peak times. However, this figure falls short of the estimated 34,000 MW required during the hottest periods. The new 300 MW boost from Bismayah will help bridge part of that gap. While the addition will not fully solve the shortage, it marks a positive step forward.
