Iraq continues to boost employment programs as part of a wide effort to reduce joblessness. The unemployment rate currently stays between 13.5% and 14%. The Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs highlights a set of measures aimed at creating jobs and improving living conditions.
Since early last year, more than 962,000 new welfare cards have reached low-income families, including young couples. This expansion strengthens the social protection network and increases support for vulnerable groups. At the same time, Iraq boosts employment programs through new technology and digital services.
The ministry launched the Mihan digital platform to connect job seekers with employers. Job seekers can now post their skills, while businesses can easily search for qualified candidates. This system helps balance labor supply and demand more effectively. Moreover, the platform provides an easier and faster way to match workers with suitable opportunities.
Vocational training also plays a central role. There are now 37 training centers operating in Baghdad and other provinces. These centers work with both local and international organizations to provide skills needed in the market. Furthermore, the ministry plans to open a new academy with a Chinese partner. This academy will train Iraqis for large investment projects, especially in the oil sector, and reduce reliance on foreign labor.
To encourage small businesses, the ministry offers loans of 20 million, 30 million, and 50 million dinars. Loan recipients must hire between one and three extra employees depending on the loan size. All new hires get registered in the social security system. This policy ensures that job creation benefits the economy while protecting workers’ rights.
In addition, the ministry has digitized all its services. From job postings to applications and automated selection, every step is now online. This change improves transparency and removes human interference. As a result, the process is faster, fairer, and more efficient.
Officials believe these steps will create long-term boost employment opportunities. They also expect stronger youth participation in the labor market and steady economic growth. By combining welfare support, training, loans, and digital tools, Iraq boosts employment programs with a clear strategy for the future.
