Iraq reveals first list of senior officials arrested in sweeping anti-corruption crackdown

Baghdad – Iraq anti-corruption arrests dominated political headlines on Sunday after judicial and intelligence officials revealed the identities of several senior figures detained during the country’s expanding corruption investigation. The operation targets lawmakers, government officials, and influ

the first group of detainees includes current and former Members of Parliament, a senior Oil Ministry official, a political alliance leader, and a well-known political adviser. The Central Anti-Corruption Criminal Court issued the arrest warrants as part of an ongoing judicial investigation.

Security forces from the Counter-Terrorism Service and the Special Division carried out coordinated operations across several locations. Officials said the raids took place simultaneously to prevent suspects from escaping or interfering with the investigation.

Among the most prominent detainees is Muthanna al-Samarrai, leader of the Azm Alliance and a current Member of Parliament. Authorities arrested him during an operation at his residence inside Baghdad’s Green Zone. Investigators continue to question him as part of the broader corruption inquiry.

The list also includes Member of Parliament Mohammad al-Karbouli. Security forces briefly detained Mahmoud al-Qaisi and Haider al-Mulla during the same operation. However, officials later released both men after completing identity verification and initial questioning.

Several other lawmakers also appear on the first detention list. They include Ziad al-Janabi, Bahaa al-Nouri, Hassan al-Khafaji, Alia Nassif, Mohammad Jamil al-Mayahi, Abdul Rahman al-Luizi, Mudar al-Karwi, Hind al-Abbasi, Bushra al-Qaisi, and Mohammad Farman al-Jubouri.

Authorities also detained former Member of Parliament Mohammad al-Saihoud. Investigators are examining allegations linked to procurement contracts dating back to previous parliamentary terms. Officials have not released additional details about the specific charges under review.

The investigation extends beyond Iraq’s legislative institutions. Authorities arrested Ali Maarij, Deputy Minister of Oil for Distribution Affairs, as part of the same campaign. Investigators are examining allegations related to fuel distribution, public contracts, and financial management within the oil sector.

Another prominent detainee is Ibrahim al-Somaidaie, a political analyst, legal adviser, and media strategist. Officials claim he played a role in facilitating commercial agreements and political arrangements that are now under judicial review.

Following the arrests, authorities transferred all suspects to the Federal Commission of Integrity. Investigators have begun questioning each detainee while reviewing financial records and official documents connected to the case.

Judicial officials also ordered the freezing of personal bank accounts and business assets linked to the detainees. Authorities say the measure aims to prevent the movement of funds during the investigation and preserve financial evidence.

The operation continues under the supervision of Prime Minister Ali Falih al-Zaidi and Supreme Judicial Council President Faiq Zaidan. Officials describe the investigation as one of Iraq’s most significant anti-corruption efforts in recent years.

The Iraq anti-corruption arrests are expected to continue as investigators examine additional evidence and expand their inquiries. Authorities have indicated that more names could emerge as the judicial process moves forward. The Iraq anti-corruption arrests reflect the government’s effort to pursue corruption cases involving senior political and state officials regardless of their positions.
