Iraq’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fuad Hussein, met with Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar, on Sunday to explore the possibility of importing gas from Turkey to support Iraq’s power plants and discuss broader energy cooperation.
A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs detailed that the meeting covered key topics such as electricity, natural gas, and oil. The officials discussed strengthening bilateral energy cooperation to benefit both countries.
The two sides also addressed encouraging Turkish companies to invest in Iraq’s oil and gas sectors by providing necessary investment incentives.
Additionally, they explored the possibility of importing electricity from Turkey to address Iraq’s supply shortages during peak seasons. The officials stressed the need to expedite the completion of the electricity interconnection project.
Both parties agreed to increase the amount of electricity Turkey will provide to Iraq, which will help meet the needs of the Kurdistan Region and Mosul.
The discussions also included the renewal of the Ceyhan oil pipeline contract, with a focus on extending it southward to boost Iraq’s oil export capacity and facilitate deliveries to European markets.
