Baghdad Elevated U-Turns Ease Traffic Flow

As part of Iraq’s ongoing infrastructure efforts, the government inaugurated two new elevated U-turns on 14th of July Street in Baghdad’s Karkh district. The Baghdad traffic improvement project aims to reduce traffic congestion and enhance daily movement across the capital.

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani personally opened the new overpasses on Saturday. As well as the construction company’s efforts and thanked Baghdad residents for their patience during the work.

This infrastructure upgrade is one of 16 traffic-easing projects initiated by the Ministry of Construction and Housing. So far, 11 of these projects have been completed. So The prime minister emphasized that the new U-turns are part of a broader effort to address chronic traffic problems and enhance public services in the capital.

In addition the Prime Minister’s Office added that the Baghdad traffic project aims to modernize roads and reduce congestion in key areas

So Officials expect the new U-turns to improve traffic flow in areas like Adhamiyah, Mansour, Alawi, and Aden Square, cutting drive times and easing pressure during peak hours.

Al-Sudani reaffirmed the government’s commitment to finishing stalled projects and starting new ones in key sectors. So He emphasized that Baghdad remains a central focus due to its growing population and rising traffic volume.

The Baghdad traffic improvement project comes as part of Iraq’s national agenda to expand urban mobility and service delivery. By fixing bottlenecks and improving road design, the government aims to ensure smoother, safer travel for residents and commuters.

City planners believe that elevated U-turns offer an efficient and cost-effective way to reduce left-turn congestion and accidents. This method allows for steady traffic movement without the need for additional traffic lights or wide intersections.

As Iraq rebuilds its infrastructure, successful projects like this show a shift toward practical improvements that impact daily life. With more initiatives underway, officials expect Baghdad to gain more connected, accessible, and reliable transportation networks.
