Baghdad Airport Development Attracts Global Investment

Iraq is advancing efforts to modernize Baghdad International Airport as several international consortia submit bids. The Ministry of Transport announced that three major consortia from nine countries offered proposals Baghdad airport development, signaling strong global interest.

Additionally, acting Director General Bassem Waheed emphasized that the Ministry will carefully evaluate each bid to select the most qualified partner. He noted that Iraq aims to secure high-quality development services that meet international standards.

The first consortium includes Asyad Holding from Saudi Arabia, partnered with Turkey’s YDA Construction; Bahrain’s Lamar Holding; Top Engineering Corporation Arabia, a Saudi branch of China’s Shaanxi Construction Engineering Group; and Ireland’s Dublin Airport Authority.

The second consortium, led by ERG International from the United Kingdom, collaborates with Turkey’s Terminal Yapi and ERG Construction.

The third bid comes from Corporación América Airports, based in Luxembourg and Argentina, working alongside Iraq’s Amwaj International.

Waheed confirmed that all offers arrived within the designated period and were documented transparently. He highlighted that this process demonstrates Iraq’s commitment to attracting private investment in critical infrastructure.

The selected investor will handle the full scope of Baghdad airport development, including rehabilitating existing infrastructure, constructing a modern passenger terminal, and managing airport operations for 25 years. The plan prioritizes safety, efficiency, and service quality to meet global aviation standards.

Next, the Ministry will conduct a technical review of all proposals. Following this, authorities will organize a public verification session to maintain transparency. Only bidders who meet technical requirements will have their financial proposals reviewed.

Experts note that Baghdad airport development will enhance Iraq’s connectivity, promote tourism, and create new business opportunities. Modernized airport facilities will also streamline passenger flow and attract international airlines.

Furthermore, regional and global investors view the project as a key step in Iraq’s broader infrastructure modernization agenda. Strengthening airport operations contributes to economic growth while supporting trade and travel expansion.

Through careful planning and international collaboration, Iraq positions Baghdad airport development as a cornerstone of its economic and transport strategy. This initiative reflects the country’s commitment to global standards and long-term operational excellence.
