Iraq anti-drug operations intensified in 2026 after authorities seized more than 1.5 tons of narcotics and issued dozens of severe sentences against traffickers. Officials said the campaign reflects growing efforts to limit the spread of drugs and dismantle trafficking networks across the country.
According to the Iraqi Interior Ministry, security forces confiscated nearly 1 ton and 662 kilograms of narcotic substances since the beginning of the year. Officials also confirmed that Iraqi courts issued 42 death sentences and 186 life imprisonment sentences against convicted traffickers.
Interior Ministry spokesperson Abbas al-Bahadli said authorities carried out extensive field operations targeting local and international drug networks. Security forces reportedly engaged in 25 direct confrontations with trafficking groups during recent operations.
The clashes resulted in the deaths of three suspected traffickers and injuries to 20 others. Iraqi security forces also suffered casualties during the operations. Officials confirmed that one officer died and 22 personnel sustained injuries while carrying out anti-drug missions.
Authorities stated that Iraq anti-drug operations now extend beyond the country’s borders. Officials conducted 12 external operations this year and activated four international coordination points to stop narcotics from entering Iraq through regional trafficking routes.
Bahadli stressed that cooperation between security agencies and judicial institutions played an important role in the success of recent operations. He added that international coordination helped Iraqi authorities track smuggling networks operating across neighboring countries.
Earlier this month, Iraq’s National Intelligence Service announced the seizure of more than one million Captagon pills alongside nearly 100 kilograms of additional narcotics. Officials also arrested members of a trafficking network during a coordinated operation with authorities in Sulaymaniyah.
Separate security reports showed Iraqi authorities arrested hundreds of suspects linked to drug crimes during recent months. Multiple government agencies continue participating in anti-narcotics campaigns across different provinces.
The Kurdistan Region also recorded thousands of arrests linked to drug-related offenses in 2025. Regional anti-narcotics officials warned that trafficking networks continue expanding despite stronger enforcement measures.
Experts say Iraq anti-drug operations face major challenges because of regional instability and cross-border smuggling routes. Iraq has increasingly become both a transit corridor and a consumer market for narcotics in recent years. International organizations also warned about rising Captagon trafficking across the Middle East.
Despite harsh legal penalties, including death and life sentences, Iraq continues struggling with growing drug use and trafficking. Analysts link the rise in narcotics activity to years of instability following the 2003 invasion, weakened border control, and organized criminal networks.
Officials say security forces will continue expanding anti-trafficking operations throughout 2026 to limit the spread of illegal substances and protect communities from the growing narcotics crisis.
