The Iraqi General Ports Company has announced significant progress in its efforts to develop Faw Port, with plans underway for a variety of major projects. The company is nearing the final stages of contracting with an international firm to manage and operate the port. A series of high-profile projects are set to be launched at the port, akin to the refinery package already in motion.
According to Farhan Al-Fartousi, Director of the Iraqi Ports Company, the fixed portion of the submerged tunnel at the Faw Port is almost complete. The tunnel will consist of two outbound and two return lanes, connecting to both the external highway and the internal submerged tunnel. The tunnel’s submerged section, made of 10 concrete blocks—each weighing 45,000 tons—has now been successfully placed and connected, marking a significant milestone in the project.
Al-Fartousi also shared that a major step forward has been made in contracting a scientific company to oversee the operation and management of the port. Once the consulting company’s opinions on the contracting mechanisms and regulations are finalized, the contract will be presented to the Supreme Committee for approval, allowing work to proceed.
In addition to this, a series of projects are being planned for Faw Port, including the establishment of a naval base, an LNG terminal, a refinery, and a petrochemical plant. The Ministry of Oil has already signed contracts for the refinery and other oil-related projects, and these are expected to become operational soon. The company also plans to create an industrial zone within the port, attracting significant interest from companies looking to invest in the large-scale development.
Al-Fartousi emphasized that these projects will not only boost the port’s capacity but also support the development of Iraq’s energy sector, infrastructure, and industrial base.
