Iraq is moving closer to completing a major regional energy initiative as Iraq’s electricity interconnection project with the Gulf States reaches approximately 93% completion of the first phase. This milestone highlights the country’s growing focus on energy security and regional cooperation.
Ahmed Musa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Electricity, said Baghdad is approaching full integration with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. He explained that the project follows European models of regional energy networks, which aim to improve efficiency, reliability, and cross-border electricity trade. According to Musa, the interconnection will significantly strengthen Iraq’s energy security and reduce vulnerability to power shortages.
The project marks a major development in regional energy cooperation. It builds on Iraq’s successful electrical connection with Jordan and follows earlier phases linking the country with Turkey and Saudi Arabia. Officials stated that these initiatives will enhance electricity reliability, allow for cross-border energy exchange, and strengthen the national electricity grid.
The Ministry of Electricity is currently finalizing the technical aspects of the first phase. Authorities noted that the rapid completion demonstrates Iraq’s commitment to implementing large-scale infrastructure projects on schedule. The project also signals Iraq’s dedication to modernizing its energy sector and ensuring sustainable power supply for the growing population.
This initial phase is a key step toward reducing reliance on imported electricity, stabilizing the national grid, and improving overall energy efficiency. Additional interconnection phases are being planned to expand Iraq’s regional energy network further and deepen cooperation with neighboring countries.
Once fully operational, the Iraq’s electricity interconnection project with Gulf States will enable more efficient electricity trade, enhance grid stability, and serve as a foundation for future regional energy projects. Analysts said the project demonstrates Iraq’s increasing role in regional energy cooperation and highlights its strategic focus on modern infrastructure and sustainable development.
