Iraq has taken a bold step by announcing major financial support for Gaza and Lebanon. During the Arab League summit in Baghdad, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani pledged a total of $40 million. This Iraq aid pledge includes $20 million for Gaza and another $20 million for Lebanon.
The prime minister made the announcement during his opening remarks at the summit. He emphasized the need for strong Arab unity and active intervention. “We have called—and continue to call—for serious and responsible Arab action to save Gaza,” Sudani said. He also stressed the need to strengthen the role of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in Gaza and the West Bank.
The conflict in Gaza took center stage during the summit. Arab leaders and officials gathered to discuss solutions, and Iraq positioned itself as a strong supporter of reconstruction efforts. The Gaza war has resulted in more than 53,000 deaths, based on information from the Gaza health ministry. These shocking figures underline the urgent need for humanitarian support and infrastructure repair.
The World Health Organization issued a dire warning. Nearly half a million people in Gaza now face starvation. Israel’s blockade on humanitarian aid has created widespread suffering. WHO criticized Israel’s new plan to deliver aid through limited distribution sites. It described the proposal as “grossly inadequate” and called for “unimpeded humanitarian access.”
Iraq’s $20 million for Gaza aims to help rebuild essential services and provide urgent relief. This aid could also support displaced families and damaged health facilities.
Turning to Lebanon, Iraq’s support remained equally firm. The prime minister voiced full support for a ceasefire in southern Lebanon. He also condemned repeated Israeli violations of Lebanese sovereignty. The Iraq aid pledge for Lebanon targets rebuilding efforts and aims to stabilize the affected areas.
Arab unity emerged as a strong theme throughout the summit. Iraq’s leaders urged the region to adopt coordinated action. Their financial contributions reflect a broader strategy to strengthen solidarity and rebuild war-affected communities.
With this Iraq aid pledge, the government reaffirmed its commitment to justice, peace, and reconstruction in the Arab world.
