Iraq solar power project

Iraq has opened its first big solar power plant in Karbala province. The project marks an important step in Iraq’s solar power project efforts to reduce fossil fuel use and fix electricity shortages.

A local company, Al-Bilal Group, worked with Orascom Construction Industries and Norway’s Scatec to build it. The solar power project stands as one of the largest private investments in Iraq’s growing renewable energy sector.

The facility spreads across a wide desert area and produces electricity from thousands of panels. At full strength, it will supply 300 megawatts. This electricity goes directly into the national grid and reduces fuel use during the day. The project also helps cut harmful emissions.

When seen from above, the site looks like a huge city of black solar panels rising from the desert sand.

The Karbala plant forms part of a wider government plan to build more renewable energy projects. Iraq already works on another 225 megawatt plant in Babil province. At the same time, officials prepare an even bigger project in Basra, which aims to provide 1,000 megawatts.

In total, Iraq’s renewable energy plans now reach about 12,500 megawatts. If all the projects move forward, they will provide one-fifth of the country’s electricity demand, excluding the Kurdistan Region.

Still, Iraq faces serious energy problems. The country produces less than 28,000 megawatts of power, while demand rises above 50,000 megawatts during hot summer months. About 8,000 megawatts come from plants that burn gas imported from Iran.

This reliance on Iranian gas creates many risks. Supply cuts and international sanctions often disrupt deliveries, leaving Iraq in a difficult position. By investing more in solar, Iraq hopes to build stronger energy security and reduce outside pressure.

The solar power project in Karbala shows that Iraq is now serious about diversifying its energy sources. With more projects in the pipeline, the country aims to meet demand, protect the environment, and reduce costs.
