Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani announced on Sunday that Iraq aims to join the International Solar Alliance (ISA) to promote solar energy and address climate change.
The announcement came during a meeting with Sumin Bagchi, the new Indian ambassador to Iraq, in Baghdad. Al-Sudani discussed the possibility of holding the 19th round of the High Joint Committee meetings and forming an Iraq-India Economic Cooperation Council. He also emphasized the need to establish the Iraq-India Business Council and facilitate trips for Indian companies to Iraq.
The ISA, headquartered in India and with over 120 member countries, focuses on the efficient use of solar energy to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
In response to the growing demand for power, Iraq is taking steps to diversify its energy sources and achieve sustainability. As part of its strategy, the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity negotiated with companies like PetroChina and TotalEnergies in 2023 to construct major power plants. The goal is to generate 12,000 megawatts of solar energy by 2030, with 7,500 megawatts expected to come from contracts with specialized corporations.
