Iraq reintegration efforts receive global recognition as the United Nations commends the country for repatriating its citizens from ISIS-linked camps in Syria. Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani received a message from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres thanking Iraq for its actions.
Additionally, Mohamed al-Hassan, head of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), delivered the message during a meeting in Baghdad. Guterres applauded Iraq for speeding up the return of its nationals from the al-Hol and Roj camps in northeast Syria. These camps, located in Rojava’s Hasaka province, hold individuals connected to ISIS.
Moreover, UN officials noted that Iraq reintegration efforts are key to regional security and social healing. Guterres confirmed the UN’s ongoing support for safe returns, rehabilitation, and long-term reintegration of Iraqi citizens.
Therefore, the al-Hol and Roj camps remain volatile, with tens of thousands of Iraqis and Syrians held there. The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), who control the area, have repeatedly warned about the dangers of radicalization inside the camps.Iraq took a positive step toward national stability by removing its citizens from such environments.
So far, Iraq has repatriated about half of its nationals from these facilities. Each group undergoes a rehabilitation program before being reintegrated into society. These programs aim to ensure community safety, emotional recovery, and reduce the risk of extremist relapse.
The UN urged Iraq to continue allocating resources to support these programs. This includes investments in psychological care, education, and legal frameworks to address accountability and prevent further violence.
Repatriating people with ties to ISIS remains a sensitive issue. Many families and tribes across Iraq remain divided on how to handle individuals linked to the group. Some are willing to reintegrate relatives who played no direct role in ISIS crimes. Others believe reintegration should be limited and carefully monitored.
Despite these challenges, Iraq reintegration efforts reflect a national commitment to justice and peace. The country is balancing security needs with humanitarian obligations under international law.
As Iraq moves forward, international cooperation will remain essential. The support of the UN highlights Iraq’s progress and encourages continued efforts in managing the complex legacy of ISIS.
