Iraq Moves Forward with Baghdad Airport Upgrade Project

Iraq moves ahead with the Baghdad airport project, aiming to improve air travel and boost the economy with private investment.Baghdad airport project has taken a key step forward in modernizing Baghdad International Airport. Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani led a high-level meeting to review plans for the airport’s development under a public-private partnership (PPP).

The meeting included representatives from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), advisors to the Prime Minister, and leaders from the Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority (ICAA). They discussed finalizing bidding documents and launching a Request for Proposals (RFP). This will allow qualified investors to join the airport upgrade project.

The Prime Minister stressed that the airport must meet international standards. He also highlighted the need to reflect Baghdad’s growing status as a regional hub. In addition, he called for clear guarantees to protect current employees and support their professional growth.

Plans include a new terminal with a yearly capacity of 8.5 million passengers. Officials expect this number to rise to 15 million by 2040. Moreover, the project includes runway upgrades and a unified VIP terminal. It will also promote investment in commercial spaces around the airport.

The IFC is advising the government on this major project. It brings experience from similar airport upgrades in nine countries. The organization will support feasibility studies, technical design, and strategies for private sector involvement.

Importantly, the government will retain control of security and other sovereign tasks. However, private investors will manage passenger services, ground operations, and air cargo.

This development is part of Iraq’s broader plan to improve its infrastructure. By modernizing its airport, the country hopes to increase connectivity and attract more foreign investment. The Prime Minister noted that this effort would also boost economic growth and job creation.

Officials will soon begin the tendering process. They aim to secure the investment and expertise needed for long-term success.
