Iraq Launches Al-Abbasiya Power Plant to Boost Energy Self-Sufficiency

Iraq has taken a big step to strengthen its power sector by launching the Al-Abbasiya power plant in Najaf. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani led the official opening of the new facility.

The Al-Abbasiya plant uses technology provided by the German company Siemens. So it supports Iraq’s growing need for electricity, especially during peak demand seasons. The plant aims to ease pressure on the national grid.

Two 132-kilovolt transmission lines connect the new plant to the national power system. Each line stretches 29 kilometers and carries 240 megawatts. Together, they deliver a major power boost to central Iraq.

Meanwhile, Iraq opened another energy project in Basra just days earlier. As well as the southern province began operating a new 480-megawatt transmission line. That line adds to Iraq’s efforts to stabilize the electricity supply across the country.

The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity confirmed both projects are part of a broader national energy plan. In addition This plan focuses on modernizing the transmission network and securing consistent electricity flow. Officials believe these moves will reduce the summer shortfalls that frustrate many citizens.

Electricity demand in Iraq has surged. The country now needs between 32,000 and 35,000 megawatts to cover domestic use. Recent projects such as the Al-Abbasiya plant help close that gap.

Iraq’s energy strategy also includes a shift toward using local resources. Officials hope to reduce the reliance on imported fuel. In past years, shortages of imported gas triggered frequent blackouts.

Electricity Minister Ziyad Ali Fadel said the goal is clear. Iraq wants to reach energy self-sufficiency. The Al-Abbasiya power plant in Najaf supports this goal by using local fuel sources.

By investing in projects like the Al-Abbasiya power plant, Iraq can deliver better service to the people. The government believes these efforts will ensure long-term energy sustainability and reliability.

Electricity access remains a key priority. Additionally These projects also support Iraq’s economy by reducing fuel imports. More local generation means more local control and stronger national planning.

As more plants come online, Iraq will be in a better position to meet both present and future energy needs. As well as The launch of the Al-Abbasiya power plant is one more step on that path.
