Iraq launches One Million Trees Project For Green Future

Iraq has announced its largest afforestation effort, aiming to plant one million trees as part of a major green transformation. The Baghdad Municipality shared plans to begin the project in the coming autumn, marking a significant step in tackling environmental challenges.

The campaign builds on the nearly completed Green Belt Project, which has already reached more than 95% of its target. This initiative will create large urban forests around the city, offering a natural shield against summer dust storms.

To make this vision possible, the municipality will use treated wastewater for irrigation. A specialized plant in the Saqlawiyah area now ensures water is suitable for sustaining trees in Baghdad’s dry climate. The first stage will cover 940 donums, or about 235 hectares, stretching between the Al-Mansour district and Abu Ghraib. The planted trees will be chosen for their ability to thrive in high temperatures and live for many years.

The one million trees project also involves transforming the former Al-Rasheed military camp. This area, covering 5,000 donums or about 1,250 hectares, will become one of the largest green lungs of the city. It will be about five times the size of Al-Zawraa Park, and it will also include new public spaces and family-friendly facilities.

Meanwhile, the third stage of development in the Abu Nuwas area is moving forward. This part of the plan will increase the number of green spaces and add 17 new recreational activities. The goal is to make it a major center for family entertainment while improving the city’s livability.

The municipality’s broader strategy focuses on modern solutions to environmental challenges. Smart irrigation systems will ensure efficient water use, while expanding tree cover will reduce the impact of climate change. Together, these measures aim to improve air quality, lower temperatures, and provide healthier spaces for Baghdad’s residents.

With the one million trees project, Iraq is sending a clear message about its environmental priorities. By combining large-scale planting, water recycling, and public recreation areas, the city hopes to create a more sustainable and livable future.
