Iraq energy self-sufficiency plan with China

Iraq energy self-sufficiency, Iraq has taken another major step to strengthen its electricity sector. The Ministry of Electricity signed an important deal with China’s Shanghai Electric to build massive power plants. These plants will generate up to 10,000 megawatts and will run on fuel produced in Iraq.

The government continues to focus on solving the long-standing electricity shortage. With this agreement, officials believe the national grid will gain strength and stability. Moreover, the project will help reduce the gap between demand and supply.

The Ministry explained that the initiative will rely on local fuel to power the facilities. Officials already began preparing for the implementation. They stressed that Iraq must use its own resources to increase production and improve services.

The Iraqi Prime Minister previously announced that the grid will eventually add tens of thousands of megawatts. This new project supports that vision. It will also increase confidence that Iraq energy self-sufficiency can soon become a reality.

Furthermore, the Minister of Electricity highlighted that the country’s strategy aims to limit reliance on imported fuel. In past years, dependence on foreign supplies created constant problems in the system. Now, the focus turns to solutions inside the country.

Officials also emphasized that diversity in energy sources is essential. The government aims to make the grid more flexible and reliable. Transitioning from foreign fuel to local fuel is central to this goal.

The plan includes building new thermal power plants that replace imported fuel, especially from neighboring Iran. In addition, the Ministry of Oil is working on using flared gas to support production. This step will strengthen the grid while also protecting the environment.

The project with Shanghai Electric therefore represents more than construction. It shows Iraq’s determination to achieve independence in energy. It also shows that the government wants to invest in resources that exist inside the country.

As a result, Iraq will see stronger services for citizens and better stability in the national grid. With continued projects like this one, the dream of Iraq energy self-sufficiency grows closer.
